The Toyota Tacoma is an adequate compact pickup truck that is more than capable of hitting the trails. Hauling and towing capability are agreeable for most off-roaders, plus it boasts numerous standard features, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa.

But what stands out are its trim levels. The Tacoma offers two engines and six trim levels to help you choose the right blend of maneuverability and power in a Toyota Tacoma.

What Are The Trim Levels For Toyota Tacoma?

Trim levels for the Toyota Tacoma include the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. Here is a rundown of the trims plus their key differences.

Toyota Tacoma SR

The SR is the most affordable truck in the lineup and offers a choice between an access cab with a 6-foot bed or a double cab 5-foot configuration. If you want a champion in control, it also comes with a 4×4 or 4×2 drivetrain coupled with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The SR comes with two engine options: the 2.7L 4-cylinder can generate 159 horsepower at 180 lb-ft of torque, and the powerful 3.5L V6 engine produces a maximum of 278 horsepower at 265 lb-ft.

Irrespective of these options, the base trim level is loaded with other remarkable features, including an intuitive media system with Bluetooth and USB interfaces, a rear power window, lumbar seat adjustments, movable tie-down cleats, a tough composite bed, and Toyota Safety Sense.

Toyota Tacoma SR5

The SR5 offers similar transmission and engine options as the SR. However, it is more stylish than the base model, with fog lights and additional exterior chrome. It also has a remote keyless entry system, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen for audio control.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

The TRD Sport features a 3.5L V6 6-speed direct-injection engine with manual and automatic transmission and gives off 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. With The TRD Sport, you get fender flares, body-colored bumpers, and a non-functional scoop. The trim also features a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels with street tires, and a front air dam.

This model can carry a maximum payload of 1,525 lbs and tow up to 6,800 lbs. One of the key reasons to choose this model is the better ride quality, thanks to the upgraded suspension.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

The off-road model is designed to go anywhere thanks to helpful components and systems such as multi-terrain select, crawl control, and skid plates.

Instead of the TRD Sport trim tuning, the Off-Road has a tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks and an electronically controlled rear differential to help you navigate any terrain easily.

It, however, resembles the TRD Sport with just the hood scoop. If you are an off-road warrior, you will enjoy a confident drive with this Tacoma.

Toyota Tacoma Limited

This Tacoma offers luxurious sophistication. It is a comfortable ride with a dual front zone automatic climate control system, sunroof, and panoramic view monitor with a camera.

The most notable feature of this trim is the standard heated leather-trimmed seating. The Limited offers an enhanced sound system with the JBL audio for entertainment.

You will also find daytime running lights, LED headlights, advanced safety features, and the largest wheels (coupled with the TRD Pro)- 18-inch polished alloy wheels.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The TRD Pro is the top trim for Toyota Tacoma. It is configured only as a 4WD, double cab model. With this trim level, you will get a 3.5L engine, a bold appearance, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Passenger volume is 42.6 cubic feet in the rear and 57.5 cubic feet in front. An active traction control system, rear cross-traffic assist, and blind-spot monitor are standard in the TRD Pro.

The Pro series is ideal for off-road adventure and equipped with the best materials and hardware to deliver outstanding and robust off-road performance.

It is fitted with 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with TRD-tuned off-road suspension. It also has TRD-tuned rear leaf springs, front coil springs, and electronically controlled locking rear differentials.

Other unique features include a Pro-branded seating with red stitching in the vehicle, a unique shift knob, and TRD Pro floor mats. The multi-terrain monitor with a camera comes in handy when heading to unexplored destinations.  image of Toyota logo

Is TRD or Limited Better?

A handful of differences between the Limited and TRD trim levels determine which is better for you. Fuel usage is more enhanced with the Limited, at 24 miles per gallon vs. 22 miles per gallon on the highway with the TRD Pro.

However, with the TRD Pro off-road, you will get numerous features, including the leather interior, climate control, and a sunroof. While the Limited is still one heck of an offroad, it is more expensive.

What Does TRD Package Include?

The Toyota Racing Development is more of a convenience package than a trim level with unique tuned parts and cosmetic enrichments for various Toyota vehicles. You will get upgraded exhausts, shocks, powerful drivetrains, and special features for off-roading and racing.

What Is The Difference Between Tacoma TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro?

More Lift and off-road capability.

The TRD Pro includes a suspension lift of 0.5 inches at its rear and 1.5 inches at the front. The result is an increased height that offers improved ground clearance.

The TRD Pro has a slight edge on towing capacity and configuration options for on-road. But for maximum potential off-road, the TRD off-road features crawl control and multi-terrain select features.

Choosing The Right Tacoma Trim Level

The Toyota Tacoma comes with a wealth of standard and unique features. Whether you want the base SR, the luxurious interior of the Limited, or one of the off-roading options, you should do your due diligence on the available trim levels.

While all the information provided is a great way to understand the trim levels, the ultimate learning experience is testing them out.  So before you purchase, visit your nearest Toyota dealership for a test drive to know which trim level suits your needs.
